Crier’s War by Nina Varela
Crier’s War has been on my TBR and on my bookshelf for at least a year, but I had never gotten around to reading it. Now, though, I am so glad I did! I picked up the book as a sapphic fantasy read and got so much more. The plot unfolded beautifully throughout the entire story, making every puzzle piece fall into place. The more I read, the more I learned about the rich world-building and the powerful messages being conveyed through the pages.
The book follows the perspectives of two women—one manmade and one human. While featuring a suspenseful and romantic storyline between the two women that I absolutely adored, the book also explores many underlying themes. It made me consider: what truly makes someone human? In an age of rising technological advancements and AI, as well as violence and unequal power distribution, this book helps readers connect fantasy to our current-day struggles.
Crier’s War has earned the position of my new favorite book, a title not easily won. I commend the author for their ability to build such a well-thought-out world while telling a beautiful love story between two strong women.
If you loved this book as much as I did, be sure to add the sequel, Iron Heart, to your TBR—because I will be doing the same!
