The Hate U Give: A Story About Police Violence, Racism, and Finding Your Voice
By Angie Thomas

The Hate U Give has been popular for many years, and as I read this book, I learned why. I would describe it as a book that absolutely everyone should read at some point in their life. I truly believe I have been changed by reading it.

From page one, I was hooked by the story of Starr and her family. The characters were masterfully written, to the point that I was truly invested in their future—and they’re not even real people! The troubles they faced, however, were very real and are faced by many people in today’s society. As a white person, I will never truly understand the reality that Black families face. This book helped me gain a deeper perspective and challenged my own understanding.

Starr being exposed to such brutality at such a young age shows both teenagers and adults that hate does not care how old you are. People experience atrocities every day, at every age. We can’t shelter our youth from experiencing bad things. What we can do is educate them and teach them to use their words. Their voices have power—just like Starr’s.

Starr became a fierce protector of her own community. This is an inspiring testament to the fact that being afraid is natural; bravery comes when you fight back anyway. The Hate U Give is an inspiring and thought-provoking read—one that I wish I had read years ago! I truly will never forget the story of Starr, her family, and her community. I give kudos to the author for her ability to express what needs to be said in such a beautiful way.

If you haven’t read this book, go read it now! The author has also written a prequel that follows Starr’s father, Maverick Carter, and I hope to read it very soon!
